Specific Gravity:
0.82 (the higher the # the harder & more durable it is)
Properties:
Very dense with a high crushing, stiffness, bending & toughness qualities
Severe dulling effect on cutting edges
Stains & polishes well
Description:
The heartwood is brown to reddish-brown and is clearly demarcated from the sapwood. The sapwood is pale with a slight yellowish tinge. Grain is typically straight but it cn be wavy. Hickory has a moderate texture when finished
Typical Uses
Handles for striking tools like hammers & axes. Also used for furniture, ladders, cutting boards & surfaces, flooring, baseball bats, railroad ties and pallets

0.58 (the higher the # the harder & more durable it is)
Properties:
Medium strength & resistance to shock loads with low stiffness
low-moderate dulling effect on cutting edges
Stains & polishes well to a smooth surface.
Exposure to UV light (sunlight) can cause the wood to darken significantly over time
Description:
The heartwood can vary from a reddish-brown to a deep red or lighter-red brown.
Normally cherry has flecks & gum pockets of varying size from very small to quite large. There can be marked color variations between boards.
The sapwood is pale (almost white) to light reddish brown or even a creamy pink.
The grain is typically straight, fine and close. Though you will sometimes see dark wavy streaks.
It finishes to a smooth texture with a rich luster.
Typical Uses
Furniture, cabinets, carving, musical instruments.

0.76 (the higher the # the harder & more durable it is)
Properties:
A hard and heavy wood. It has medium crushing and bending strength with low stiffness
Seemingly almost water proof. It is exceptionally resistant to wear
Moderate dulling effect on cutting edges
Stains & polishes well to a textured surface
Description:
The heartwood can vary from a light tan or yellowish brown to dark or pale brown. It can at times have a pinkish tint
The sap wood is whiteish to light brown
The grain is typically straight and open with a medium texture
White oak has longer rays within the wood and when quarter sawn displays more of the stripping & tiger ray flakes than red oak
Typical Uses
Furniture, cabinets, boatbuilding, flooring, railroad ties, pallets.

Properties:
Heavy and hard red oak, commonly called Oak, is very hard wearing. It has medium stiffness and bending strength with high crushing strength
Moderate dulling effect on cutting edges
Stains & polishes well to a highly textured surface
Description:
The heartwood can vary from a yellowish tan to dark or pale brown with hints of red & pink.
The sap wood is whiteish to light yellowish brown
The grain is typically straight and open with a fairly course texture
Typical Uses
Furniture, cabinets, boatbuilding, household flooring and railroad ties
